People just turn a blind eye to it. People buy books because something about the title/content/author appeals to them. Not because you're selling it.<br /><br />2) Self-branding totally works. Take Chuck Wendig for example. He build a strong fanbase by offering something that people want: idiosyncratic writing advice and all-around nerdery and when his big guns were out of the over, his audience was readier than hot cakes. Wendig's talented, but I didn't know that when I bought Blackbirds. I bought Blackbirds because it was written by Chuck Wendig and I was dying to see if the guy's got game.<br /><br />3) John Rector once told me: never get in the way of your book. That's some fucking deep insight right there and I think you're getting the jist of it. But I think it goes beyond the obvious. If someone comes up to you and shows interest in your novel, give him a copy and ask him to do a review.
